"There is more to owning a dog than food, water and an occasional brushing. You should know your responsibilities to the animal, your neighbors and the law"

Dear Brown County Dog Owner:

Your dog is a source of pride, security, and companionship to you and your family. That is one reason why licensing your dog is very important. The second reason for licensing your pet is insuring his (or her) quick return to you if he becomes lost. If your dog is wearing a license, the County can notify you of his whereabouts and hold him for you for up to 14 days. If he is not wearing a license, he can only hold him for three days.

Our State law also requires that all dogs, including service and police animals, be registered. Kennel owners must also register with the County Auditor's Office. They receive special tags for their animals.

Please call or stop by your Brown County Auditor's Office to purchase your dog's tag. We can also answer any questions you have about the licensing program.

Frequently Asked Questions

C
ONTROLLING YOUR DOG

When?

At all times. The Ohio Revised Code specifies that all dogs must be either kept confined to your property or be under reasonable control at all times. Letting your dog out the door, for instance, is not normally considered reasonable control. It is considered reasonable if you dog is leashed or under your control as you walk him. You can be held responsible for damages which your dog causes to property or persons.

Why?

As a courtesy to others and to protect your dog. Imagine how your neighbor must feel when your dog runs through his garden, messes up his yard, knocks over his trash can, or bites his child. If you live near farm country, imagine if you were the farmer who had just had his animals killed or injured by dogs. All of these things can and do happen in Brown County. It is the fault of no one except the irresponsible dog owner.

It's also dangerous for your dog to run at large. Dogs are no match for cars. Your dog may have fun digging in the trash and garbage, but it can kill him. He could accidentally eat a sharp object or purposely eat sharp bones, both of which could puncture intestines and kill him. Or the irate neighbor or farmer could kill or injure him. back to top | back to faq's

IMMUNIZING YOUR DOG AGAINST RABIES

When?

By the time your dog is 3-4 months of age. It's wise to follow the advice of your veterinarian in this areas. Depending upon which vaccine your vet uses, you will need new shots every one or three years.

Where?

Any Veterinarian. back to top | back to faq's

Why?

The answer to this is simple. Rabies can be contracted by any warm blooded animal -- including man. It is almost always fatal. Rabies immunization helps to prevent contraction of the disease.

Rabies is normally transferred through a bite or scratch. This can only occur when animals are together, so it is safer to keep your dog confined.

Why?

First, licensing is a requirement of State Law. Second, the license attached to your dog's collar will identify you as the owner should the dog be lost. If your dog, with his license attached, is found running at large by the Brown County Warden, you will be contacted by phone to let you know that the dog has been impounded and where you can retrieve him.

With a license your dog can be kept for up to 14 days. Without a license your dog can be held for no more than three days according to State Law.

Vicious  Dog Law

The law requires owners of vicious dogs to purchase $100,000 in liability insurance and it also forbids the debarking of vicious dogs even if they are not considered vicious only by breed, not deed. All dogs identified as pit bulls are vicious by Ohio law (ORC 955.11) even if they are not specifically mentioned by breed in state of local law.
